What people use it for

• Age spots: the use with the strongest evidence behind it, and the reason many people buy this particular gel. Applied daily to the backs of hands, face and forearms
• Gums and mouth: rubbed onto the gums, or diluted as a rinse. The sweet taste makes it far easier to use in the mouth than an oil
• Dehydrated and dry skin: glycerine is a humectant, so it draws moisture into the skin rather than sealing it in like an oil

Why glycerine, not an oil?

Ozone gas is highly unstable - it breaks down within minutes and cannot be bottled or applied to skin on its own. It has to be locked into a carrier.

In an oil, ozone reacts with the double bonds in unsaturated fatty acids to form ozonides. Glycerine has no such double bonds, so the chemistry is different: ozone is stabilised as a distinct compound rather than as a fatty-acid ozonide. The practical consequences are what matter to you.

• It dissolves in water. That means it can be diluted, sprayed, or used as a rinse. An oil cannot
• It is not greasy. Nothing to absorb, no residue on clothing or bedding
• It tastes sweet. Ozonated oils make most people gag; glycerine does not, which is why it dominates for mouth, gum and pet use
• It is a humectant, not an emollient. It pulls water into the skin rather than forming a barrier over it - a genuinely different way of hydrating

The trade-off: it needs to be kept cold, and it is slower and more demanding to make than an ozonated oil. If you want something to sit on a wound for hours, an oil does that better. If you want something you can dilute, rinse with, or use in a mouth, this is the one.

Age spots - human study

A 2022 study in Skin Research and Technology tested ozonised glycerine-based cosmetic products on human facial skin and reported lightening of age spots with consistent application over several weeks. This is the most directly relevant evidence for this product, and it is a single study rather than a replicated body of work. Read our summary.

How the field grades the evidence

The Madrid Declaration on Ozone Therapy (4th edition, 2025), the consensus document of the International Scientific Committee of Ozone Therapy, grades several relevant applications at Level B - reasonable scientific evidence that benefits outweigh risks - including dental caries and periodontal disease, periodontitis, necrotizing gingivitis, alveolar osteitis, oral lesions, pressure ulcers and chronic wounds.

Ozonised gel in gum disease - small randomised trial

An Italian split-mouth trial in 10 adults with stage III periodontitis compared an ozonised gel against chlorhexidine gel, each alongside scaling and root planing, over three months. Both improved every measured index. Directly compared there was no significant difference for most measures - and chlorhexidine performed significantly better on two of them at three months. Ozonated water as a mouth rinse - randomised clinical study

A trial in 46 adults compared daily ozonated water rinsing against 0.2% chlorhexidine over 14 days. Both significantly reduced Streptococcus mutans counts; all 23 participants in the ozonated water group achieved at least a 50% reduction, against 7 of 23 on chlorhexidine. Wound healing - review of mixed evidence

Anzolin and colleagues (Medical Gas Research, 2020) reviewed 28 articles on topical ozonated oil, finding it repeatedly associated with faster wound closure, lower microbial load and modulated inflammation. Most underlying studies were animal models or small case series. Read our summary.

Laboratory virus inactivation

Takeda and colleagues (Food and Environmental Virology, 2021) reported that ozonated glycerol inactivated SARS-CoV-2 in laboratory testing. This was measured on virus samples in vitro, not in people, and says nothing about what happens when the gel is applied to skin. Read study.

Antimicrobial activity - laboratory

A 2020 review in Molecules (Ugazio and colleagues) reported minimum inhibitory concentrations of 1.18-9.5 mg/mL against bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, and 0.2-0.53 µg/mL against Candida. Nearly all in vitro. Read our summary.

Veterinary use

Dr Jim Bridge has documented the use of ozonated glycerine in veterinary practice, including topical wound care and oral health in animals, and presented his findings at the 2025 International Veterinary Ozone Therapy Summit.

How to use

• Age spots: apply to clean skin on the affected areas 1-2 times daily. This is slow - think weeks rather than days
• Gums: apply a thin layer directly with a clean finger
• As a mouth rinse: dilute 5-10% with distilled water and rinse. Do not swallow
• Skin: apply a thin layer to clean, damp skin. It works best on slightly damp skin, being a humectant
• Pets: a small amount on the gums or affected skin. Consult your vet for anything specific

Always dilute for the mouth and any sensitive area - 5-10% with distilled water. Undiluted glycerine on mucous membranes can sting. Patch test first, and start with a small amount to check your tolerance.

Questions people ask

Does it really help with age spots?

This is the best-evidenced use of the four gels. A 2022 study in Skin Research and Technology tested ozonised glycerine cosmetic products on human facial skin and found age spots lightened with consistent use over several weeks. It is one study, results vary, and it takes patience - but it is real published evidence, which is more than most cosmetic claims carry.

Why use this instead of an ozonated oil?

Because it dissolves in water and does not taste of oil. That makes it the practical choice for gums and mouths, for spraying or diluting, for pets, for hairy areas, and for anyone who dislikes a greasy finish. For sitting on a wound for hours, an oil is better.

Can I use it in my mouth?

Yes - that is one of its main uses. Apply neat to the gums with a clean finger, or dilute 5-10% with distilled water as a rinse. Do not swallow. If you have a dental problem, see your dentist.

Can I use it on my pets?

Many customers do, most often on teeth and gums, where the sweet taste makes it far easier than an oil. Dr Jim Bridge has documented veterinary use. Consult your vet for specific conditions.

Why does it need refrigerating?

Ozone compounds are perishable, and glycerine holds them best when kept cold. Warmth degrades it over time. Keep it in the fridge and it will hold potency far longer.

Will it sting?

It can on mucous membranes or broken skin, which is why we recommend diluting 5-10% with distilled water for the mouth or sensitive areas. On ordinary skin most people notice nothing.

Is it greasy?

No. It is water-soluble, so it rinses off and leaves nothing on clothing or bedding. It is also virtually odourless, unlike the oils.

Storage

Keep refrigerated. Store away from direct light and heat. The gel may solidify below 18°C - let it return to room temperature before use. Use within 12 months of opening.
