Description
Fill it with tap water. Nothing else. Press the trigger and the Microbe Mister 2.0 turns that water into ozonated water on the spot - a powerful disinfectant that kills 99.9% of bacteria on a surface in 30 seconds, then reverts to oxygen and water. No chemical residue, no fumes, nothing to rinse off. One rechargeable device covers cleaning, disinfecting and deodorising for the whole house, and you stop buying bottled cleaning products altogether.
New to ozone? Here is the whole idea
The air you are breathing is oxygen - O₂, two oxygen atoms joined together. Ozone is O₃. The same thing with a third atom attached, and that third atom is barely held on. It wants to leave.
When ozonated water meets a bacterium, a virus, a mould spore or the molecule making a smell, that spare atom leaves and takes them apart on contact. It is not a poison that interferes with them - it physically breaks them down. Which is also why nothing builds a resistance to it, the way bugs learn to shrug off the same old spray.
Ozone is a far stronger oxidiser than chlorine - 2.07 volts against 1.36 - and that difference shows up in the testing. In a 2024 study of steel and polymer surfaces, ozonated water was found to be 100 to 230 times more effective than sodium hypochlorite (bleach), depending on the organism. It did the same job at roughly a hundredth of the concentration. It is used commercially in the food industry for exactly this reason, and well documented in the medical literature. The difference is what happens afterwards: the third atom is gone, the ozone reverts to plain oxygen, and what is left on the surface is water.
What it actually produces
Most cleaning sprays never tell you their active concentration. Ours is measured by iodometric titration at 25°C - the long-established laboratory method for ozone in water, which reports the total active oxidant the cell puts out - and it depends on your water - the cell needs the minerals in tap water to work, so harder water makes more:
- Soft water (TDS 60 - typical of Christchurch, Wellington and much of Auckland): 1.56 mg/L
- Moderate (TDS 120 - Hamilton and river-fed supplies): 1.92 mg/L
- Harder water (TDS 170 - bore-fed supplies): 2.76 mg/L
That range matters, because it is the range the published research uses. Certified aqueous ozone sanitisers run at about 1 to 1.7 mg/L, and the surface-sanitising standard they are held to is 99.9% within 30 seconds of visible wetness. This unit sits in that band on New Zealand tap water, and above it on harder supplies.

The technology
Inside is a miniature high-performance electrolytic water generator module with Japanese core technology. It instantly electrolyses tap water into an efficient cleaning solution rich in germ-busting O₃ (ozone), oxygen atoms, hydroxide ions and hypochlorous acid - the active oxidising agents that do the cleaning.

Product Description
The Microbe Mister transforms ordinary tap water into a powerful, chemical-free cleaning and disinfection solution. Using advanced electrolytic technology, it generates ozonated water on demand - perfect for households, businesses, and healthcare settings where safe, effective sanitisation matters.
Version 2.0 introduces user-replaceable components for extended product life and sustainability, including a replaceable 18650 lithium battery and electrolysis module.
Environmental Benefits
By generating your own cleaning solution from tap water, the Microbe Mister eliminates the need for throwaway bottled cleaning products. This significantly reduces plastic waste, chemical production, and transport emissions. One device replaces countless single-use cleaning bottles, making it a truly sustainable choice for conscious consumers and businesses.
Applications
Ideal for use in households, supermarkets, offices, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, schools, and other public spaces. This versatile spray effectively cleans and deodorises surfaces. Spray your fruit and vegetables with it to take off the surface microbes and mould spores that start things rotting, so produce keeps longer. It is also excellent for washing tableware, children's toys, and pet items, as well as for plant and flower care - see our organic garden guide for what the research supports.
Spray until the surface is visibly wet, leave it for about 30 seconds, then wipe - or simply let it dry, since there is nothing to rinse off. In water itself ozone works faster still (published disinfection tables show 0.5 ppm destroys 99% of E. coli in about 3 seconds), which is why a produce soak or a filled drink bottle works so well; on a surface, half a minute of wetness is the certified sanitising standard. Wondering whether it actually works? Read our honest guide - what it does brilliantly, where it falls short, and how to use it in the garden.
Frequently asked questions
What do I put in it?
Plain tap water, nothing else. Do not use distilled or demineralised water - the electrolysis needs the minerals naturally present in tap water to work.
Is it safe around children and pets?
The spray disinfects on contact and then reverts to ordinary water, leaving no chemical residue. You can wipe surfaces down or simply leave them to dry - there is nothing to rinse off a highchair, a toy or a pet bowl.
What can I clean with it?
All household cleaning jobs - kitchen, bathroom, toilet and laundry - in place of bleach and other disinfectants. It also washes fruit and vegetables, tableware, children's toys and pet items, and deodorises shoes, sports gear and pet areas.
Does it work on viruses?
Yes, and this is one of the better-studied parts. In published testing, ozonated water at 2 mg/L reduced SARS-CoV-2 infectivity by 99.9% in ten seconds, and at 1 mg/L by around 99%. A separate 2024 hospital-infection study found ozonated water inactivated the virus within 30 seconds, and that 1.5 mg/L worked better than 0.5 mg/L.
The same study makes the practical point we would make anyway: proteins in saliva and other organic matter use up ozone before it reaches the virus. So on anything visibly dirty, clean first and sanitise second. Ozone is a sanitiser, not a degreaser.
Does it kill mould?
On a surface, yes - with patience. Mould spores are tougher than bacteria and viruses, and the surface needs to stay actively wet for two to five minutes rather than thirty seconds. It is genuinely useful on shower glass, grout surfaces, window reveals and the back of the fridge.
What it will not do is fix a mould problem inside the wall. Mould puts microscopic roots down into porous materials like plasterboard, timber and grout, and a surface spray cannot reach them. If mould keeps coming back in the same spot, the cause is moisture in the structure and no spray of any kind will solve it.
How long does a charge last?
It runs on a rechargeable 18650 lithium battery (2550mAh) charged by USB-C. A full charge gives roughly 45 minutes to an hour of continuous spraying - enough to empty the 500ml tank five or six times over. Everyday cleaning happens in short bursts, not continuous spraying, so in practice a charge lasts a long time between top-ups. As one verified customer put it: "once charged seems to operate for a long time."
What maintenance does it need?
Very little. Both the battery and the electrolysis module are user-replaceable, so the device is built to be repaired rather than replaced - and there are no cartridges, refills or consumables to buy.
Is it really better than bleach?
On the evidence, yes - and by a wide margin at the concentrations that matter. A 2024 study in the journal Water tested both on steel and polymer surfaces and found ozonated water 100 to 230 times more effective than sodium hypochlorite, comparing the concentration and contact time each needed to do the same job. Ozone was working at 0.5 to 1.5 mg/L; the bleach solutions were at 50 to 150 mg/L.
The everyday version: it does the same work at about a hundredth of the strength, and then turns back into water. No fumes, no bleached tea towels, nothing to store out of reach of children. It is the same reason the food industry uses ozonated water commercially in place of chlorine.
