Does Aqueous Ozone Really Work? A New Zealand Guide to Chemical-Free Sanitising

Aqueous ozone is simply ozone dissolved in water. You make it on the spot from ordinary tap water, use it, and within a short time it has reverted to oxygen and water. There is no residue to rinse off, nothing to store, and nothing to dispose of.

This guide covers what it is, what the evidence actually says, where it does and does not replace a conventional cleaner - and how gardeners use ozonated water on produce and plants. Does aqueous ozone actually work?

Yes - within limits that are worth understanding before you buy anything.

Ozone is a powerful oxidant, and its antimicrobial action in water is well documented in the food-safety and water-treatment literature. It is used commercially to sanitise produce, process water and food-contact surfaces, and certified commercial aqueous-ozone systems carry sanitising claims at the same dissolved-ozone concentrations a good home device produces. The standard these systems are certified to is 99.9% reduction with the surface kept visibly wet for about 30 seconds - so spray until the surface is properly wet, give it half a minute, then wipe.

In water itself, ozone works fast - published disinfection tables show 0.5 ppm destroys 99% of E. coli in about 3 seconds and 99.99% in 6. That is why a produce soak or a filled drink bottle works so well. On a surface, where the water film is thin and grime competes for the ozone, the certified sanitising standard is about 30 seconds of visible wetness.

The limits matter just as much:

  • It does not last. Dissolved ozone breaks down within minutes. That is the point - no residue - but it also means you cannot mix a batch on Monday and use it on Friday, and it gives no lasting protection to a surface after it dries.
  • It handles light grease, not heavy grease. Ozone oxidises the unsaturated fats in everyday food films and fingermarks, so a spray and a good wipe deals with normal benchtop grime. What it is not is a degreaser - baked-on oven grease and polymerised fat need a proper degreasing product first.
  • Grime uses it up. On a visibly dirty surface, wipe the worst off first - dirt and food debris consume ozone before it reaches the micro-organisms underneath. Wet, wait, wipe works; spraying over caked soil does not.
  • Wet contact is what counts. A light mist that dries in seconds does very little. Coverage and half a minute of wetness are what deliver the result.

Where it beats a conventional cleaner

  • Anywhere residue is a problem. Food preparation surfaces, chopping boards, lunchboxes, drink bottles, fridge shelves, pet bowls, high chairs and toys - all places where you would rather not leave a chemical film behind.
  • Toilets and bathrooms. Spray the seat, lid, buttons and rim, leave it wet for half a minute, and wipe. Ozone oxidises the sulphur- and organic-based compounds that cause washroom smells rather than perfuming over them - and you are not left with a chemical film on surfaces you touch. (Limescale is a separate job - see below.)
  • Rinsing produce. Ozonated water is used commercially to reduce surface micro-organisms on fruit and vegetables, and studies show it clearly outperforms plain water on many surface pesticide residues too - detail in the garden section below.
  • Odours generally. Fridges, bins, drains, shoes and gym gear - ozone breaks down many odour compounds at the source, which is why it is the standard tool for smells that keep coming back.
  • Wiping away ant trails. Ants navigate by invisible scent trails, and wiping trails away is standard pest-control advice. Ozonated water cleans and oxidises the organic compounds those trails are made of - one of our customers uses it for exactly this. The honest detail is in the FAQ below.
  • Sensitivity to cleaning products. Nothing is added to the water - no fragrance, no surfactant, no propellant.
  • Cost and waste over time. One refillable bottle and tap water, instead of a shelf of single-purpose sprays.

Where a conventional cleaner is still the right tool

  • Baked-on oven and range-hood grease - you need a degreaser; ozone handles the everyday film, not the burnt-on layer.
  • Soap scum, limescale and hard-water marks - mineral deposits need an acid or abrasion, not an oxidant. This includes the waterline ring in the toilet bowl.
  • Anywhere you need a sanitiser that keeps working after it dries.
  • Situations with a regulated cleaning protocol that specifies a particular product.

In practice most households end up using both: aqueous ozone for the everyday wipe-down, food surfaces and odours, and a small number of specialist products for the jobs above.

Ozonated water in the garden

The same chemistry that sanitises a chopping board is being studied on produce and plants, and some of it is genuinely useful at home. Ozonated water is short-lived by nature, so everything below is a make-it-fresh, use-it-now job - and it is a chemical-free supplement to good garden practice, not a fungicide replacement.

🍅 Produce soak - the best-supported use

Soak fruit and vegetables in freshly ozonated water for 15-30 minutes, agitating now and then. Published studies report substantially better removal of many surface pesticide residues than plain water - roughly 30-60% for several common insecticides, and up to 87-97% for chlorpyrifos on most vegetables tested - with no significant loss of vitamin C or antioxidants. Results vary by crop: leafy greens respond best, waxy-skinned produce like cherry tomatoes least. Residues inside the plant cannot be washed out by anything.

🌿 Powdery mildew suppression

For mildew-prone plants - cucurbits, roses, grapes - spray foliage to run-off with freshly made ozonated water every 3-4 days, early morning, coarse spray at close range. Trial results are mixed and the strongest results used higher concentrations than home units produce, so treat it as a chemical-free supplementary measure alongside pruning and airflow, not a fungicide replacement. A 2023 vineyard trial cut mildew infection by up to half with weekly sprays.

🌱 Seedlings and irrigation water

Water seedlings and transplants with freshly ozonated water - research on tomato seedlings found improved growth and nutrient uptake at moderate concentrations. Treating tank, reservoir or hydroponic make-up water is one of the strongest-evidenced uses: around 0.5-1 ppm inactivates Fusarium spores and other water-borne nasties. In hydroponics, always treat the water before adding nutrients - ozone destroys chelated iron and manganese.

🌷 Cut flowers

Refresh vase water daily with freshly ozonated water. It keeps the bacterial count down, which is what shortens vase life - one study more than doubled the vase life of roses, though at a higher concentration than home units make. Cheap to try, no downside.

Garden ground rules: use it within minutes of making it - ozone's half-life in water is around 15-30 minutes and shorter in warm water; spray in the cool of the morning, coarse droplets, close to the leaf; keep sprays off very young foliage or use the gentlest setting; and skip soil drenches - soil organic matter consumes ozone instantly, so it does nothing useful there. Not a treatment for grey mould (botrytis) - the field evidence went the wrong way, and repeated leaf-wetting can favour it.

Questions people ask

Is aqueous ozone the same as an ozone generator for a room?

No, and the difference matters. Aqueous ozone is dissolved in water and used as a spray or a soak. A room ozone generator releases ozone gas into the air, which is a different job with different safety rules - people and pets should not be in the room while it runs. Ozone gas is a lung irritant and should never be breathed deliberately.

How long does the surface need to stay wet?

About 30 seconds is the benchmark certified commercial aqueous-ozone systems sanitise to, and it is a good rule at home: spray until visibly wet, wait half a minute, wipe. In water itself ozone is much faster - published disinfection tables put 99% of E. coli at about 3 seconds in 0.5 ppm ozonated water - but a surface is not a beaker: the film is thin, it dries, and grime competes for the ozone. Half a minute of wetness is what delivers a result you can rely on.

How long does ozonated water stay active?

Minutes, not hours - the half-life is around 15-30 minutes and shorter in warm water. Make it when you are about to use it. Cold water holds ozone longer than warm.

Can I use it on food?

Ozonated water is used commercially to rinse produce and is approved for food contact in a number of jurisdictions. It leaves no residue, so there is no need to rinse afterwards.

Can it help keep ants away?

One of our customers finds that wiping benches and entry points with ozonated water stops ants re-forming their trails, and the idea stacks up better than most kitchen folklore. Ants navigate by invisible scent trails, and wiping those trails away is exactly what pest-control authorities recommend doing with any good cleaner. Ozone is an oxidant, and researchers have shown ozone can break down the scent chemicals insects use to communicate. To be straight with you, though: no study has tested ozonated water on ants specifically, so we call this a useful cleaning bonus rather than pest control. A wiped trail is temporary relief either way - ants will re-find uncovered food, so sealed containers and closed entry points are still what solve an ant problem.

Can I use it on my plants?

Yes - see the garden section above. The short version: freshly made, on produce and mildew-prone foliage and in irrigation or vase water, as a supplement to good practice rather than a spray-programme replacement.

Does it damage surfaces?

At the concentrations these devices produce it is gentle on most household surfaces. Ozone is an oxidant, so test an inconspicuous spot first on delicate surfaces, and it is not the right choice for natural rubber or some untreated metals over the long term.

Do I need to buy refills?

No. The input is tap water. The Microbe Mister's battery and electrolysis cell are replaceable when they eventually wear out, and are sold separately.

Is there a smell?

A faint one, a bit like the air after a thunderstorm. It disperses quickly. Use it in a normally ventilated room, as you would any cleaner.
