Two different jobs - start with the right water

Ozone does one thing to water: it oxidises whatever is in it. That makes it the most powerful disinfectant the water industry has, and it also means the result depends entirely on what you put in the jug. So there are two ways to use this unit, and they start from opposite ends.

1. Drinking freshly ozonated water

If you are making ozonated water to drink - the way people in the ozone community drink it every morning - start with filtered or distilled water, not straight tap water. Clean water has nothing in it for the ozone to react with, so what you get is water carrying dissolved ozone and oxygen and nothing else. Ozonate tap water instead and the ozone spends itself on the chlorine, organics and minerals in the water, the dissolved concentration is lower, and you are drinking the oxidation by-products along with it. Distilled or reverse-osmosis water gives the cleanest result and holds its ozone longest; if you drink distilled water regularly, add minerals back afterwards.

• 500 mL: 10 to 15 minutes
• 1 litre: 20 to 30 minutes

Drink it within twenty to thirty minutes, while the ozone is still active - after that it has turned back into oxygen. It is traditionally taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, and most people start with one glass a day and build up.

2. Purifying doubtful water

If the job is making questionable water safe - a tank, a bore, a river on a tramping trip, an unfamiliar tap overseas - the order reverses. Ozonate first, to kill what is living in it, then run it through a filter (activated carbon or a good gravity filter) to take out the oxidised by-products and anything the ozone does not touch: dissolved metals, nitrate, hardness. Ozone has been used to make drinking water safe since 1906, and it is still the benchmark the water industry measures other treatments against. It inactivates bacteria and viruses in seconds and destroys the chlorine-resistant parasites - Cryptosporidium and Giardia - over a thousand times faster than chlorine, then breaks back down into oxygen. Ozonate-then-filter is exactly the sequence a modern water plant uses; the US Food and Drug Administration lists ozone as Generally Recognised as Safe for bottled water and food, which is why the "pure" bottled water on a supermarket shelf has almost always been ozonated.

Why people drink it

Ozonated water has a long tradition in ozone therapy practice across Europe, Russia, Cuba and China, where it has been used for decades as a mouth rinse, a wound and surgical irrigation, and - drunk fresh on an empty stomach - for gut and stomach complaints. The people who drink it daily describe what it does for them in much the same terms: they feel awake and clear in the morning, and their digestion feels settled. The clinical research is beginning to catch up with the practice. In a 2016 study of 132 patients at Fudan University's Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center, patients who drank 300 mL of ozonated water twice a day alongside standard antibiotic treatment for Helicobacter pylori cleared the infection more often (97% against 79% in gastritis, 94% against 73% in duodenal ulcer) and their ulcers healed faster, with no side effects reported. That study used medical-grade ozonated water at 5 mg/L, made from pure oxygen. Produce wash

Fill a stainless steel sink or a glass or ceramic bowl, add the fruit and vegetables, drop the stone in and bubble for 10 to 20 minutes. Ozonated water takes off the surface bacteria, yeasts and mould spores that start produce rotting, and helps lift surface residues, so berries, leafy greens and stone fruit keep noticeably longer in the fridge. It is the reason commercial packhouses and the food industry wash with ozonated water rather than chlorine. The same soak sanitises baby bottles and teats, toys, dentures, toothbrushes and dishcloths - and a cold ozonated footbath is an old remedy for tired, sweaty feet.

Odour and air treatment

Run without the stone, the unit puts 300 mg of ozone an hour into the air - enough to treat a car, a fridge, a wardrobe, a boat cabin or a small room of up to 20 m3. Ozone oxidises the molecules that carry smells rather than covering them: cigarette smoke, pet odour, damp and mustiness, stale food, the plastic smell of a new car. Set the timer, close the space, and leave it. The car adapter means it runs from the cigarette-lighter socket.

Nobody stays in the space while it runs. Ozone at treatment concentrations is not for breathing. Allow about 30 minutes for every 10 m3, then open up and ventilate for at least 30 minutes before using the space again - an hour if it cannot be aired. If you can still smell ozone (a sharp, clean smell like the air after a thunderstorm), give it longer. Frequently asked questions

How much ozone ends up in the water?

The generator makes 300 mg of ozone an hour from room air, and the stone dissolves a share of that into the jug. The result is water in the concentration range the water industry uses to disinfect - well above what is needed to kill bacteria and viruses, and below the medical-grade water used in clinical ozone therapy, which is made from pure oxygen with different equipment. The unit is not designed for therapy protocols or for making ozonated oil.

Can I drink it every day?

Yes - made from filtered or distilled water. Ozone-treated water is what the water industry produces and what bottled-water plants sell, and there is no residue to accumulate because the ozone has turned back into oxygen by the time you finish the glass. Most people drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, which is how it has traditionally been taken, and start with one glass a day. What you do not want to drink every day is ozonated tap water: the ozone reacts with the chlorine and organics in it and leaves the by-products behind. Filter first if you are drinking it fresh; filter afterwards if you are purifying.

Why filtered or distilled water for drinking?

Because ozone is not selective. In clean water it has nothing to react with, so it stays dissolved as ozone and you drink ozone and oxygen. In tap water it reacts with chlorine, dissolved organics and minerals, which uses up the ozone and produces oxidation by-products - small amounts, but not what you set out to drink. Distilled or reverse-osmosis water gives the highest, longest-lasting ozone concentration; a good filter jug is a reasonable second.

Why does it have to be glass, ceramic or stainless steel?

Ozone attacks many plastics and can pull compounds out of them into the water. It also perishes natural rubber. Use a glass jug or bottle, a ceramic bowl or a stainless sink, and keep the silicone tubing that comes with the unit.

How long does the ozone last in the water?

At room temperature dissolved ozone has a half-life of roughly half an hour, so drink it within twenty to thirty minutes for the full effect. In a sealed glass bottle in the fridge it lasts a few hours longer. After that you simply have very clean water.

Does it replace a water filter?

No - it does a different job, and the two belong together. Ozone kills the living things in water and oxidises the compounds that cause taste and smell; it does not remove dissolved metals, nitrate, fluoride or hardness, and it leaves behind the oxidised remains of whatever it reacted with. For drinking freshly ozonated water: filter, then ozonate. For purifying doubtful water: ozonate, then filter.

Is it safe to run in the room I am in?

When you are bubbling water, a little ozone escapes the surface - run it in a ventilated kitchen and do not lean over the jug. When you are treating air, leave the car, cupboard or room closed and empty, and ventilate before you use it again. Never breathe ozone deliberately.

What will it not do?
