The PURIMAX Portable Air Ozonator treats a whole room at once. Set the timer, leave the room, and 5 grams of ozone an hour goes to work on everything the air touches - the smoke in the curtains, the solvent smell of fresh paint or new carpet, the mould and mustiness in a damp room, the pet odour in the rug, and the bacteria and viruses on every surface. Then it breaks back down into ordinary oxygen. No sprays, no fragrance, no chemical residue, nothing to wipe off afterwards.
Room size guide
PURIMAX-5 treats rooms up to 50 m3 - a standard bedroom, office, hotel room or living room. For a larger space, run one cycle, ventilate, and run a second rather than a longer one.
How it works
Ozone is oxygen with a third atom attached, and that third atom is barely held on. It leaves at the first opportunity and takes apart whatever it lands on - the volatile molecules that carry smoke and odour, the cell walls of bacteria, the protein coat of a virus. Because it is a gas, it reaches where sprays and wipes cannot: into fabric and upholstery, under furniture, inside cupboards and ducting, into cracks and joints, and some way into porous materials such as timber, plaster, carpet underlay and grout - which is where mould and old smoke actually live.
Place the unit in the middle of the room, close windows and doors, set the timer, and leave. A 30 to 60 minute cycle treats a 50 m3 room. Run the PURIMAX for no more than one hour at a time. For a heavily affected room - fire smoke, a long-term smoker's room, flood damp - ventilate, let the unit rest, then run a second cycle.
Ozone works best in humid air. In a dry room, leave a bowl of water or a damp towel in the space - the published disinfection results below were all obtained at moderate to high humidity.
What the research shows
Room ozonation is one of the better-studied uses of ozone. In a 50 m3 room, 5 g/h delivers a working concentration in the range of roughly 10 to 20 parts per million during the cycle. That is the band the published work uses:
- 25 ppm for 15 minutes, followed by a humidity burst, inactivated 99.9% or more of twelve different viruses on plastic, glass, steel and fabric surfaces (Hudson et al. 2009, Ozone: Science & Engineering).
- 6 ppm for 55 minutes reduced SARS-CoV-2 by 99.9% (Yano et al. 2020).
- Efficacy rises sharply with humidity: the same virus reduction that took 40 minutes at 85% relative humidity needed far longer in dry air (Dubuis et al. 2020, Scientific Reports).
On odour and chemical fumes, ozone is the method fire-restoration and hire companies use because it does not mask a smell - it oxidises the molecules that make it. Smoke, cooking, pet, mould and musty odours are all volatile organic compounds, and so are the solvents that off-gas from fresh paint, new carpet, new furniture and varnish. All are broken down the same way, and because ozone is a gas it follows them into the porous materials they have soaked into. It is used commercially in the food industry for exactly this reason.
Safety - read this before your first cycle
At room-treatment concentrations ozone is harmful to breathe. That is the point - it is lethal to microbes - so the rules are simple and not optional:
- Nobody in the room. People, pets, fish tanks and plants all come out before you press start. Close the door.
- One hour maximum per cycle.
- Ventilate before re-entry. When the timer finishes, open the windows and doors from outside the room if you can and give it at least one hour of fresh air before anyone goes back in. In a room that cannot be ventilated, ozone takes two to four hours to break down on its own. If you can still smell it - a sharp, clean smell like the air after a thunderstorm - it is not ready.
- Protect sensitive materials. Ozone is hard on natural rubber, latex, and some elastic and delicate fabrics. Move them out for high-output treatments.
Built to last
The PURIMAX is housed in a stainless steel case with a carry handle, so it moves from room to room and shrugs off years of use. The ceramic ozone plates are the only wearing part, and they are user-replaceable - no consumables, no filters, no refills.
Frequently asked questions
How long before I can go back into the room?
Ventilate for at least an hour with the windows open. Ozone breaks down into oxygen on its own, but from treatment concentration to a safe level takes two to four hours in a closed room - fresh air does it far faster. Your nose is a good final check: if you can still smell it, wait.
Why only one hour at a time?
One hour at 5 g/h is plenty for a 50 m3 room - the research results above were achieved in 15 to 55 minutes. Running longer does not treat the room better; it only raises the concentration you then have to ventilate. Give the unit a rest between cycles.
Does it deal with mould, mildew and mustiness?
Yes, and this is where a gas has a real advantage over any spray or wipe. Ozone kills spores in the air and on surfaces, destroys the musty odour compounds, and works its way into cracks, joints and porous materials - timber, plasterboard, grout, carpet underlay - some distance beyond where a liquid could reach. Treat a damp room and it comes back smelling clean rather than covered up. The one thing it cannot do is remove the moisture that let the mould grow in the first place: if a wall is wet, fix the leak or the ventilation as well, or the mould will return.
Will it clear the smell of fresh paint, new carpet or new furniture?
Yes. Those smells are solvents and other volatile compounds off-gassing from the material, and ozone oxidises them the same way it does smoke. A newly painted or newly carpeted room is a classic use - run a cycle, ventilate well, and the room is usable days sooner than waiting for it to air out on its own.
Will it get rid of cigarette or fire smoke?
Yes - this is what ozone generators are best known for. Smoke odour is a mix of volatile compounds soaked into every soft surface, and ozone oxidises them where they sit. Heavily smoked rooms may need two or three cycles with ventilation between each.
Can I run it in a room I am in, on a low setting?
No. The PURIMAX is a high-output unit for unoccupied spaces only. There is no safe setting for an occupied room.
Is there anything left behind?
No residue - ozone breaks down to oxygen. Ozone does react with the compounds it destroys, which is one more reason to ventilate properly after every cycle.
