Can Ozone Therapy Reduce Side Effects of Radiation Therapy?

A New Zealand case study

In a sure sign that ozone therapy (OT) is coming of age in New Zealand, Auckland naturopath and educator Julie Fergusson has published a case study The use of ozone therapy as an adjunctive support treatment with radiation therapy in prostate cancer examining the case of a 57-year-old male patient who underwent radiation therapy (RT) for prostate cancer.

Julie Fergusson is an experienced Naturopath with a demonstrated history of working in the health wellness and fitness industry. Skilled in Food & Beverage, Wellness Coaching, Dietary Supplements, Public Speaking, and Nutritional Counseling. Strong healthcare services professional with a BA focused in Education and psychology from University of Auckland.

Working together with conventional medicine

The patient was concerned about the risk of side-effects from the RT such as fatigue, burns and incontinence. Fortunately, the radiologist was familiar with previous studies showing the benefits of OT in minimising RT side-effects and enhancing the effectiveness of conventional cancer treatments and was supportive of using OT as an adjunct complementary to the standard treatment plan.

How does it work?

One of the proven benefits of OT is the oxygenation of tissue. One of the known problems with RT is that it can cause a lack of oxygen in the treatment region. This is especially detrimental to cancer treatment because cancer cells thrive in an oxygen depleted environment. OT not only minimises some of the side-effects, but has also been shown to increase the effectiveness of the RT.

What was the regime?

The patient received 23 sessions of RT along with some other pharmaceutical and herbal treatments. The patient also received two different methods of OT: 1)Ozonated saline solution (O3SS) given intravenously using medical grade oxygen and a medical ozone device. 2)Minor autohemotherapy MiAH. This a procedure where a small amount of the patient’s blood is removed and mixed with ozone in a syringe and injected into a muscle (gluteal muscle).
