Ozonized Gel Against Four Candida Species: A Pilot Study and Clinical Perspectives

Background: hard-to-treat Candida infections in the mouth

Candida species cause oral thrush and related infections, which can be a particular problem for denture wearers and around dental implants, and which do not always respond well to standard antifungal treatments. That has prompted a search for alternatives. This study tested an ozonated gel - a topical gel carrying ozone in an oil base - to see whether it could act against Candida.

Study design: an in vitro (laboratory) pilot test against four Candida species

This was an in vitro pilot study - carried out on culture plates in the laboratory, not in patients. Using an agar diffusion method (a standard semi-quantitative way of measuring whether a substance stops microbes growing), the researchers assessed the antifungal activity of an ozonated gel (referred to as GeliO3) against four species of Candida, and compared it with chlorhexidine, a widely used antiseptic.

Findings: antifungal activity comparable to chlorhexidine

The ozonated gel showed antifungal activity against the Candida species tested, reported as comparable to chlorhexidine. The researchers noted that the gel's insolubility and strongly water-repelling nature made it harder to test with this laboratory method - but suggested that the very same properties could be an advantage in the mouth, letting the gel stay on a lesion rather than being quickly washed away by saliva.

What the authors concluded

The authors concluded that, as a preliminary result, the ozonated gel may help combat Candida infections, and could be worth exploring for localised oral infections and implant-related candidiasis. They presented this as an early, promising finding that points towards clinical study rather than a finished result.

Limitations of this study

This was a laboratory (in vitro) pilot study, so its results cannot be assumed to carry over to real infections in the mouth - that would need clinical trials in patients. It was explicitly preliminary, used a semi-quantitative testing method, and the physical properties of the gel limited how well that method could measure its activity. The comparison with chlorhexidine is encouraging but, on its own, is not evidence of clinical effectiveness.
