Ozone Therapy for Breast Cancer: An Integrative Literature Review

Background: interest in ozone as a complementary approach in breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and alongside conventional treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, there is growing interest in complementary approaches that might support patients through treatment. Ozone therapy is one of these. This paper reviews what the published research - both laboratory and clinical - currently says about ozone in the context of breast cancer, and where the evidence is still thin.

Study design: an integrative literature review of preclinical and clinical evidence

Rather than reporting a single new experiment, this is an integrative literature review: the authors gathered and synthesised existing studies on ozone therapy and breast cancer, drawing together both preclinical work (laboratory and animal studies) and clinical studies in patients. An integrative review casts a deliberately wide net across different study types, which helps map the whole field but does not weigh the evidence as strictly as a systematic review or meta-analysis would.

Findings: laboratory promise, and a mainly supportive role in patients

In the preclinical studies reviewed, ozone - on its own or combined with chemotherapy - showed some ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. In the clinical setting, the authors report that ozone's role has so far been mainly supportive rather than directly anti-tumour: helping to manage the side effects of chemotherapy, improving tissue oxygen levels and blood circulation, supporting immune recovery and reducing fatigue. The review notes that the most effective dose and timing of ozone therapy have not yet been established.

What the authors concluded

The authors position ozone therapy as a potential complementary, adjunctive part of integrative oncology for breast cancer - used alongside standard treatment to support patients, not as a replacement for it. They are clear that the clinical evidence specific to breast cancer is still limited, and that more research is needed to define how ozone should best be used.

Limitations of this study

As an integrative review, its conclusions are only as strong as the underlying studies, and it combines preclinical findings with a small body of clinical work rather than pooling comparable trials statistically. Much of the encouraging anti-cancer signal comes from laboratory and animal studies, which do not always translate to people. There are few breast-cancer-specific clinical trials, and, as the authors note, key practical questions such as optimal dose and timing remain unanswered.
