Ozonated water, ozonated oil and its products
Background
Ozone gas has been explored for decades as an antimicrobial and wound-care agent, but pure ozone is unstable and impractical to store or transport. Two workarounds have become common in practice: bubbling an ozone-oxygen gas mixture through water to make "ozonated water", and bubbling it through a vegetable oil (typically sesame or olive oil) over a much longer period to make "ozonated oil", where the ozone reacts with the oil's fatty acids to form more stable compounds called ozonides and peroxides. This overview article, published in the Journal of Ozone Therapy, set out to summarise how these two ozonated products are prepared and the ways they are used in ozone therapy practice.
Study design

The article describes preparation methods in detail: ozonated water is made by passing an ozone-oxygen gas mixture through mineral water via a diffuser for around 5-10 minutes, while ozonated oil is made by bubbling the same gas mixture through sesame oil continuously for 100-200 hours, allowing ozonides and peroxides to form. It then compiles the reported uses of each product and comments on their storage stability.
Findings
The article reports that ozonated water is typically drunk on an empty stomach or applied topically, with claimed applications spanning viral and bacterial infections, wound healing, dental hygiene and pain relief. Ozonated oil products are described for skin conditions, hair care and digestive complaints. On stability, the author notes that ozonated water degrades quickly - with a half-life of only around 9 hours at roughly 20°C, falling to about 4-5 hours at typical room temperature - whereas properly prepared ozonated oil is reported to remain stable for one to two years when stored correctly, since its ozonides and peroxides are far less reactive than dissolved ozone gas.
What the authors concluded
The author concluded that ozonated water and ozonated oil are accessible, low-cost preparations with a wide range of practical applications, but that their usefulness depends heavily on how they are made and stored. Ozonated water needs to be used soon after preparation because it loses its ozone content within hours, while ozonated oil's longer, slower preparation gives it a shelf life measured in years, making it the more practical option for repeated topical use.
