Clay jojoba oil facial mask for lesioned skin and mild acne
Background
Clay facial masks are a long-standing cosmetic approach used to calm skin lesions and improve overall skin condition. Jojoba oil is often added to these masks for its moisturising and skin-conditioning properties. Despite widespread use, there was limited real-world evidence on how effective a combined clay and jojoba oil mask actually is for people dealing with lesioned skin and mild acne vulgaris, a common inflammatory skin condition marked by comedones (blocked pores), papules, pustules and, in more severe cases, cysts. The researchers set out to gather practical, everyday evidence on the mask's effects when used by a large group of people outside a controlled clinical trial setting.
Study design
This was an open, prospective, observational pilot study - meaning participants were tracked forward in time, there was no control group, and neither participants nor researchers were blinded to the treatment. A total of 194 participants completed questionnaires (192 women and 2 men, average age 32.3 years), applying the clay jojoba oil facial mask themselves two to three times per week for six weeks. Of these, 133 participants provided complete lesion counts, allowing the researchers to measure changes in specific lesion types (comedones, papules, pustules and cysts) as well as broader quality-of-life questionnaires before and after the six-week period.
Findings
Across the group with complete lesion counts, total skin lesions fell by an average of 54% over the six weeks. Looking at individual lesion types, papules dropped by 57.3%, cysts by 68.6%, pustules by 49.4% and comedones by 39.1%. Alongside these physical changes, participants' self-reported quality-of-life scores improved substantially, suggesting the visible improvement in skin was matched by how participants felt about their skin.

Limitations of this study
This was an open-label, uncontrolled pilot study with no placebo or comparison group and no randomisation, so the improvements seen cannot be separated with certainty from natural fluctuation in acne severity, participant expectation, or other skincare habits during the six weeks. The sample was overwhelmingly female (192 of 194 participants), so the findings may not generalise well to men. Only 133 of the 194 participants provided complete lesion counts, and lesion counting relied on self-administration rather than independent clinical assessment. The study followed participants for six weeks only, so it does not show whether benefits are maintained over the longer term. As a preliminary, observational pilot study, these results should be viewed as an early signal rather than confirmed proof of efficacy.
