A preliminary study on topical ozonated oil in the therapeutic management of atopic dermatitis in murine
Background: seeking gentler options for atopic dermatitis
Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a common, itchy inflammatory skin condition driven in part by an immune imbalance in which Th2-type responses dominate. Standard treatments such as topical steroids work but have limitations with long-term use, which has prompted interest in gentler alternatives. This study explored whether topical ozonated oil - an oil carrying ozone, applied to the skin - could help calm the inflammation of atopic dermatitis. It was an early, laboratory-based test in mice rather than in people.
Study design: an atopic dermatitis mouse model treated with topical ozonated oil
The researchers created an atopic dermatitis-like condition in BALB/c mice by repeatedly applying a combination of allergens (staphylococcal enterotoxin B, ovalbumin and a calcipotriol ointment) to the skin over about 15 days. They then treated the affected skin with topical ozonated oil and compared outcomes with control groups, looking at the skin lesions themselves and at markers of immune activity - including Th2-type cytokines (IL-4 and IL-31), the regulatory cytokine IL-10, and nerve growth factor (NGF).
Findings: reduced skin inflammation and a shift away from Th2-dominant activity
In this mouse model, the authors reported that topical ozonated oil noticeably reduced inflammation and healed the skin lesions within about seven days, with thinner epidermis and lower nerve growth factor expression. On the immune measures, ozonated oil lowered the Th2-type cytokines IL-4 and IL-31 while raising the regulatory cytokine IL-10, and left Th1-type cytokines in the blood largely unchanged - a pattern the authors interpreted as a shift away from the Th2-dominant response that characterises atopic dermatitis.

The authors concluded that topical ozonated oil helped restore a more balanced immune response and eased the skin changes of atopic dermatitis in this model, and suggested it may be worth exploring as a potential therapeutic option. They framed the work as preliminary and mechanistic, pointing towards further study rather than presenting a finished treatment.
Limitations of this study
This is preclinical animal research: the results come from a mouse model of atopic dermatitis, not from people, and effects seen in mice do not always translate to human skin conditions. The study was described by its authors as preliminary, and it did not include the kind of randomised, controlled human trials needed to establish whether topical ozonated oil is safe and effective for treating eczema in patients. The findings are best read as an early, encouraging signal that warrants clinical investigation, not as evidence of a proven treatment.
