Introduction to Ozone Therapy

Please know that this information is merely informative. It is not to make a claim that ozone or any particular therapy might cure any condition, but to discuss the known physiology of ozone therapy.

What is Ozone Therapy?

Ozone Therapy saturates the body with oxygen, and optimal levels of oxygen in the body are crucial in health and healing. 65% of human body mass is oxygen, and it is involved in all the metabolic functions that sustain life.

Medical Properties of Ozone, in brief:
• Ozone is a potent regulator of the immune system
• Ozone stimulates increased uptake and utilisation of oxygen
• Ozone increases the efficiency of the body’s anti-oxidant enzyme system
• Ozone improves circulation
• Ozone is anti-inflammatory
• Ozone is anti-microbial

Ozone Therapy Overview

The worlds leading authority on Medical Ozone Velio Bocci, MD, researcher and scientist has found that introducing ozone (O3) into the body maximises oxygen delivery and consumption. Ozone therapy has a direct impact on the red blood cells that transport oxygen around the body, and on the use of that oxygen by body tissues, the respiratory system and the immune system.

Effects on oxygen transport and red blood cell functioning

Ozone therapy improves the flexibility of the red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body. This increased flexibility means blood enters even the smallest capillaries of body tissues more effectively. It also results in red blood cells carrying a higher negative electrical charge. This means they repel each other rather than stack together, improving the rheological (flow) properties of the blood and enabling it to more transport oxygen more efficiently.

Ozone therapy stimulates red blood cells to generate a compound called 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3 DGP). This molecule controls the movement of oxygen from red blood cells to body tissues Without sufficient 2.3 DGP, tissues can become oxygen starved.

Ozone therapy also increases the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels in red blood cells. As this system is responsible for intracellular energy transfer, the extra energy in the red blood cells enables them to become what Bocci describes as ‘super gifted’.

Increased oxygen consumption observed within body tissues.

Ozone therapy appears to stimulate the mitochondrial functions of cells and improve the body’s ability to repair itself. Mitochondria are the furnaces where a cell’s energy is made, and both German and Cuban researchers link increased oxygen consumption within cells to mitochondrial stimulation.

Effects on the immune system; combating inflammation and pathogens

Bocci and Menendez have determined that ozone can modulate the immune system and bring it to a healthier set point of balance. Where the system is under-functioning, ozone therapy can stimulate it. Where the system is over-active and producing inflammation that is not needed, ozone therapy can dampen it and allow inflamed tissues to heal. Inflammation fights invaders and repairs damaged tissues, but if it is not turned off after injury is healed the inflammation itself becomes destructive. In the case of joint pain, modulating inflammation with ozone can sometimes lead to instant results.

Ozone and its metabolic products are directly toxic to pathogens. In fact, ozone punches holes in the membranes of bacteria virtually instantly, hemorrhaging them on the spot. Chlorine compounds used more commonly as disinfectants are 100x slower.

When it comes to viruses, these stealth pathogens must gain entry to your cells to produce disease. Research shows that most viruses do this through sulfhydryl (SH) groups on their outer shells that attach to healthy cells and enter them.  Because ozone is extremely reactive oxygen, it will strip the hydrogen atom off the sulfhydryl as follows: SH + SH + O3(ozone) > S-S = H2O + O2. As the sulfhydryl groups (SH) are oxidized to S-S, the virus is inactivated. The damaged virus remains in your blood stream where your immune system can see it and deal with it.

The bio-oxidative point of view

Dr Otto Wahberg, the Nobel Prize winning cancer specialist, found that chronic ill health is linked to respiratory enzymes become toxified. The body does not process oxygen very well so the metabolism is suboptimal.

Dr. Wayne McCarthy, New Zealand based ozone therapist, says this toxicity is behind a lot of ill health - especially chronic problems, although it can also be a factor in acute conditions. Saturating the body with oxygen using ozone will reinvigorate the whole system.

“I think it makes sense when you realise that every step of every chemical reaction in the body requires oxygen. So when oxygen levels are sub optimal or low, the chemical reactions in the body don’t go to full completion, and you are not getting the benefit of what your metabolism is capable of. So when we provide ozone we clear the toxicity out of the respiratory pathways and reinvigorate the bio-oxidative system which is the foundation of your life process, your life biology."
